The CMIL is managed by a Director. A work study student provides part-time administrative assistance. Additional staff are typically brought on for specific projects.
Sherri Hope Culver, Director and Associate Professor
Department of Media Studies and Production, Klein College
Sherri Hope Culver serves as Director of the Center for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL) at Temple University, USA where she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies and Production in Klein College. Sherri’s teaching and consulting centers on the business of media, with a focus on media literacy and children’s media. Sherri collaborates internationally with researchers, educators, media companies, schools and nonprofit organizations on projects connected to children & media. She has worked with Nickelodeon, Participant Media, YouTube Kids, WGBH Children’s, Sprout (now Universal Kids), and PBS, among others. Across all her projects, Sherri seeks to help audiences better understand their world and the influence of media in that world, especially children.
Prior to her academic appointment, Sherri worked in the media industry for over twenty-five years as a producer and television executive producing over 600 hours of television programming. She has made numerous television appearances and has hosted literally hundreds of hours of television talk shows, including countless hours of live public television pledge drives!
The Center for Media and Information Literacy serves as a hub for research and projects encouraging critical thinking about the influence and creativity of media and media literacy. Currently, the CMIL is involved in a research initiative analyzing messages about media use reflected within popular children’s television. The CMIL is recognized as a global chair of media and information literacy by the United Nations (UNESCO and the UNAOC) and is a member of the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy.
Sherri is author, co-author and editor of several books, articles and curricular materials, including serving as co-executive editor of the International Yearbook on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue for several years. Most recently, she authored a chapter in the latest edition of “20 Questions about Youth and the Media” titled, “How are the needs of children considered in children’s media?” (2018). Sherri served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, and as its president for three terms. She serves on the steering committee of the North American chapter of the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and Information Literacy. Sherri is a member of the Children’s Media Association and a founding member of the Philadelphia Youth Media Collaborative. She serves on the Advisory Council for the Center for Intercultural Dialogue.
Sherri writes regularly about issues facing children’s media and media literacy on her blog. and discusses the issues with guests on her television series, Media Inside Out. Sherri has given talks and presentations on five continents and over 13 countries. She has moderated panels at major universities and conferences, including the Children’s Global Media Summit, World Summit on Media for Children, UNESCO Media and Information Literacy conferences, International Media Literacy Research Symposium, National Association for Media Literacy Education and UK Children’s Media Conference. She has been interviewed by major news outlets, including Variety, Christian Science Monitor, Philadelphia Inquirer, Radio Times (NPR), KQED Mindshift, and the Los Angeles Times.
Sherri holds a master’s degree in public culture from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research explored the impact of children’s television on the social development of girls and their ability to form diverse friendships.
Baker W. McNamara (work-study, Fall 2020)
Baker serves as the work-study student for the Center and the Assistant Producer for Media Inside Out. He is a junior, studying Media Studies and Production with a concentration in production, within Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University. He is expected to graduate in May 2022. While at Temple Baker spends his time leading the music department at WHIP Radio, hosting Temple Talk, and working at the Center for Media and Information Literacy. In the future, Baker hopes to one day combine his love for Pop Culture and his professional experiences while in college to work in the entertainment industry. David Cooper Moore is the former Program Director of the NMTCS project. Additionally, Moore led a series of university-school partnerships between Temple University and K-12 schools and programs in Philadelphia to bring media and information literacy enrichment programs to students in in-school and after-school contexts. Hugh Kesson is a former PhD candidate with Temple’s College of Education. Kesson has been a high school teacher, college professor, media educator and documentary film maker. He has worked in the US, UK and Australia, and has managed to add to his collection of higher education qualifications on all three continents.
